Ski Chalet Chic
Many designers use the Decorative Fair to source unusual pieces for their client’s ski chalets and hunting lodges – like antler furniture, beautifully upholstered seating, French and Swedish painted antiques, decorative period rugs and hunting trophies. At the Winter 2015 Fair, we created a ski chalet display in the foyer which was a sell-out! It comprised antique country and painted European furniture, classic leather and upholstered seating, reindeer pelt throws, antler chandeliers, colourful Welsh blankets and indigo-print cushions. Combined with snow scene paintings from our art dealers, ski posters and antique skis revitalised as lamps, the ‘chalet’ looked truly cosy and was a typically Decorative Fair approach to winter style.
Not everything in the room-set was antique. We included a selection of 20th century industrial lighting, a piece of fairground art, contemporary sculpture and vintage Moroccan and Scandinavian rugs. Local fireplace suppliers Chesney’s kindly lent us an amazing faux-effect fire basket, which drew much attention. Perhaps most popular of all were the vintage sledge coffee tables from Antiques By Design.
Our starting point that inspired the whole feel of the room-set was a wonderful section of ancient Swiss barn panelling supplied by French Country Living. It really set the tone and choice of colours in the space. (At the time of writing, the panelling was still for sale… just saying, should you have a chalet to decorate!)
