A late 17th century green glazed Safavid tile
An elegant tile fragment in the cuerda seca technique in vibrant shades of green, cobalt blue, yellow, black and white. Floating to the centre of the design is a chinoiserie cloud band with blue and white scrolls of rolling clouds underpinned by yellow bolts of lightning. The cloud band speeds towards the tail of another bolt of yellow lightning seen to the left edge of the tile. A flowering branch unfurls above with black and white five-petalled flowers and blue and yellow leaves. Nestling to the base is a rocky mound in chinoiserie style from which sprout blue and yellow leaves.
Persian, circa 1670
Height: 9 3/4 in; 25cm
A highly unusual and whimsical mid-19th century collection of velvet fruits in a period wicker basket.
