Colour & Texture at The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair

While the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is on and we’re there NOW, we’ve spotted a couple of really cheerful stands full of colourful textiles. This one (above) is Molly Hogg, who has a superb collection of textiles from around the globe.

Rob Blacks (right) stand is full of beautifully-upholstered chairs and sofas, using antique and vintage textiles. He has enjoyed a number of sales on opening day and since, but has a good supply still available.

Orlando Harris has many fans amongst his clientele… “Orlando Harris is a great pleasure to deal with – makes collecting fun with his irreverent eye” says David Linley, and designer to the stars Nicky Haslam comments: “Orlando has the most exceptional eye and an amazing knack for finding rare and beautiful objects and furniture“.

Orlando, whose business, Blanchard Limited, based at Core One, in London’s Fulham Road, was established in 1950, is known the world over for its unusual mix of Continental, English country house and C20th pieces, which create an exciting depth and range of choice.  Orlando buys what he likes, so be prepared for the unexpected!

Timothy is a specialist in fine period furniture and associated works of art based in Belgravia, London.  Amongst the stock he is bringing to the Decorative Antiques Fair is an unusually small-scale pair of late C19th French giltwood bérgères, most probably made for children ~ as seen on the left here.

Timothy Langston is just one of many new exhibitors at the Autumn Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair.

He also brings an early C18th portrait of an American Gentleman in a Red Coat, probably by an American School artist from the Circle of Gerardus Duyckinck, circa 1730 as here on the right.

It’s always good to see oneselves in the papers (and their electronic equivalents) and the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair has just been featured in the Wall Strret Journal, no less. In an article about Antiques & Design Shopping in London, the Decorative Fair gets a good write up by Rita Konig, alongside some other London treasures.

Antique Furniture, London Decorative Fair Style

The bit that we like most is that Rita states that “There is no fair like this in America”. The gist of the article as a whole is that the prices for antiques in London (unlike most things)are incredibly reasonable and far lower than the prices you pay when the same items get stateside.  So all you Wall Street bankers… (or your interior designers) get over here in January 2011 (or in May or September 2011) and what you save on antiques at The Decorative Antiques & Tetxiles Fair for your New York pad will pay for the trip.

Some more antique furniture and classic modern designs illustrate why interior design gurus and adddicts love London’s Decorative Antique Fair… At the last fair in April 2010, Magus Antiques had a successful week.  Sales included this large antique ebonised bookcase – perfect for storage and display.

And then a little further down the way, you’d have been delighted to spot these two sofas (depending on your period):  The first a Turquoise classic from the 20th Century, sold by C20C who are (naturally) a modern design specialist… See their furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics and objets on their site, here.

The second sofa, a highly unusual, high-backed English Victorian period sofa, was a great buy on opening day. Exhibitor Seventeen-Twentyone, who offer interesting country house furniture, could have sold it four times over…  Seventeen-Twentyone are based in north Yorkshire.

Chairs, especially pairs, and comfy upholstered types, were popular at the last Decorative Antiques fair – here are two examples that sold.

On the left, a kilim-covered antique Georgian armchair; and on the right, one of a pair of Spanish Arts & Crafts leather and walnut library style chairs circa 1900.

A beautiful pair of mid-C20th French salon chairs in lovely pale sycamore alo sold but I’m afraid the picture let them down.  Never mind, you’ll have to come to the next Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair to see more antique and modern decorative furniture

The front cover of this month’s (September 2009) House & Garden magazine shows a fantastic continental bombe commode displayed amidst vibrant aboriginal paintings, in the contemporary penthouse home of an art collector & dealer. It demonstrates beautifully how the centuries can blend together or juxtapose successfuly – just what our Fair is all about.

The home also features textiles such as decorative kilims used to cover comfy chairs.  You can seek out similar items at the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair if you’re inspired by the look.  Whilst it can’t be guaranteed you’ll see aboriginal paintings (although we do have lots of art), you’ll definitely find a wide range of continental furniture, quirkily-upholstered seating, kilims and other unusual textiles to be used in their own right – or worked in to decorate with other pieces.
