From the carpet specialist Gallery Yacou who join us again at the Winter Decorative Fair.

As Italian carpets are few and far between, we have selected this Turkish carpet for the foyer display as it would be a piece typically enjoyed by Italian home owners in the C19th…

It’s an attractive late 19th Century Ushak carpet from Turkey measuring 5.44 x 3.41 metres (17′ 10″ x 11′ 2″ ) ~ a highly decorative early piece with a rare ivory field and spacious large pattern and an unusual square format.

Amongst the secrets and pleasures you can see in the Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair, alongside other pieces from three centuries of Italian design in the foyer display you might catch sight of this large (height:2.26m x width:4.3m) Mario Fortuny block printed cotton panel from c1920 as shown by Rhona Valentine. Rhona Valentine has an important collection of rare early Mariano Fortuny panels, documents and costume for sale dating from the early 1900’s up to 1949. They also have a large selection of cushions made from early fragments by Mariano Fortuny.

Rhona, based in Petworth, has an extensive collection of 17th, 18th and 19th century European and Islamic textiles and costume pieces including embroideries, needlework, crewelwork (see below), velvets, paisley shawls, cushions & hangings.

PS For my information as much as anything… you may all know this already…  but I didn’t: According to Wikipedia: Crewelwork, is a decorative form of surface embroidery using wool and a variety of different embroidery stitches to follow a design outline applied to the fabric. The technique is at least a thousand years old. It was used in the Bayeux Tapestry, in Jacobean embroidery and in the Quaker tapestry… The crewel technique is not a counted-thread embroidery (like canvas work), but a style of free embroidery. It was in the 17th Century, its heyday, and now traditionally worked on a closely woven linen twill ground “Jacobean linen twill” fabric, typically linen or cotton. This linen is part of the design and many stitches allow the sight of the linen through and around the design.

Colour & Texture at The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair

While the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is on and we’re there NOW, we’ve spotted a couple of really cheerful stands full of colourful textiles. This one (above) is Molly Hogg, who has a superb collection of textiles from around the globe.

Rob Blacks (right) stand is full of beautifully-upholstered chairs and sofas, using antique and vintage textiles. He has enjoyed a number of sales on opening day and since, but has a good supply still available.

Ron Simpson is well known amongst international collectors of textiles and tribal art.  He sells traditional tribal textiles, costumes & jewellery, bags and baskets from South West China and Indonesia.  He usually has a fab collection of hats!

This unusual and varied combination makes for a colourful display of stock.  The picture here shows Ron on his stand at the former Hali Textile & Tribal Art Fair which used to be held at Olympia.

It’s not often that we get to mention Facebook on the Decorative Fair Antiques & Interiors Diary but the Textile Society (mission: to promote the study of textile disciplines and celebrates the history and culture of textiles, both traditional and contemporary) are promoting themselves through this medium this year. The Facebook page says about their “second London Fair… for a fantastic range of antique dress and textiles from around the world, 17th century to 1970’s, Pre-1950’s rugs and good quality vintage dress, accessories, ephemera, books and advice on conservation, we have it all!” What more can we add?

Well obviously, that there are many dealers and exhibitors at the Battersea Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair with textiles, rugs and accessories too.  (Don’t ask me how many.) All for sale and great for dsign and interiors. Check the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair exhibitors here…

Make a double textile whammy of it…

Decorative textiles are readily found at the London Decorative Fair in 2011… vintage and antique French linens for beds or curtains, printed toiles and silks for borders and throws, lustrous damasks and antique crewel work for colour and texture, embroidered panels mounted for wall displays.

Katharine Pole (above) specialises in French cottons and linens, particularly quilts, and toile de Juoy, and all manner of haberdashery items such as vintage metallic threads and trimmings, even milliners’ storage and display shelves which make unusual bathroom or kitchen cabinets. Katharine exhibited at the Decorative Fair in January and May.

Rugs and runners, large and small, help soften wooden or stone floors, and are a classic addition to traditional or modern decorating schemes; Gallery Yacou (right) are well known and experienced dealers in oriental rugs and have a lovely selection displayed here at the January 2011 Fair.

The Decorative Antique Fair is open this weekend on both Saturday (11 to 7pm) and Sunday(11 to 6pm) in Battersea Park’s marquee.  And don’t worry about the fact that the antique fair has been on since Tuesday with record numbers of visitors ~  each exhibitor has fully a replenished stand full for the weekend.  You’ll see the widest variety of antiques and textiles of every sort and style.

For those of you who don’t know the Decorative Antiques & Tetxiles Fair, it’s a favourite for homeowners,  interior designers and collectors alike who are looking for the classic, the unusual and the stylish.

There’s a free courtesy shuttle from in front of the Sloane Hotel.

French Block Quilt At The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair

Katharine Pole, one of the exhibitors at September~October’s Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair sold this beautiful C18th quilt at the fair among many other linens and cottons. Katherine specialises in casual elegance in the form of French antiques & textiles, indigo blues, printed cottons & rustic linens, upholstered chairs & objects to delight from the 18th to the mid-20th century.  This French block print quilt is believed to be from the Jouy region.

Katherine who runs her business from London (NW8) works by appointment between fairs.  Homes and Gardens says of Katherine… “A unique touch. W A Pinn & Sons is a second generation family firm of antiques dealers run by brothers, John and Keith Pinn who specialise in good quality Georgian and earlier furniture and also stock a large selection of antique metalware, lighting, candlesticks and other small items. They aim to continue thier father’s tradition of always trying to have “something interesting and unusual in stock”.　All of their stock is carefully selected for authenticity, merit and interest and they pride themselves on having a wide range of goods, some high value pieces, but including lower priced antiques which have some particular feature that lifts them out of the ordinary.

Keith’s wife Gill runs Lennard Antiques at the same premises, concentrating mainly on oak and country furniture, treen and English Delftware.

If you are a big textiles fan, then you may already know that there’s an Antique Textiles Fair in London two days before the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair – not to be confused!  This is said to compliment the long running Antique Textile Fair (now the the Textile Society’s Manchester Fair) – with a similar theme and content.  It will feature 60 stands “piled high” with both textiles and garments from from the 17th century to the 1970’s as well as conservators and second-hand booksellers.

The Textile Society is for all textile professionals and enthusiasts and the London – & Manchester - fairs are especially for the collector side of those enthusiasts.

Obviously it might make sense for those collectors to be able to visit both their and our event…

Meanwhile look at the mirror by Huw griffith who will be exhibiting at The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair, alongside Malcolm Gliksten of Relic. Huw specialises in highly original old mirrors, giving them a new lease of life by incorporating vintage fabrics behind the glass or using textiles to bind the frames.
