Antique meanderings in the absence of any news…
What should I write about today I thought… I know I’ll search for “what’s new in antiques”. I thought it was a witty concept…
So what did we find? Well for starters it’s the name of at least one antiques shop – the first one being in Iowa. And it’s not really our scene.
Other entries in the serach results are “What’s New” sections within antiques stores, so that’s fair enough. But still not useful in answering my original query.
But what I really meant was what’s new in interior design, in the context of antiques. Because as you all know, there’s always a new thing going on whether it’s newer (ie more recent) antiques or collectibles or old antiques coming back into style or being used in a new way, decoratively. And that’s what I wanted to know.
I guess that the way you’ll have to find out is to come to the next Decorative Fair in Battersea Park in October and catch up with what the 130-odd exhibitors have to show. They know. And that’s why the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is so popular – people know it’s bang on the moment… dare I say it, that it’s an avant-garde bellwether.
Talking about being a bellwether, I see that I wrote about what’s new in antiques in 2010 (I forgot). Is that good or bad?
PS A bellwether is the lead sheep in a flock that the others follow. Thus the idea of being a leader or the advance party in anything new. However it’s no consolation that it was usually a castrated male!
